Protecting Important Data

There is only one way to make sure your data is always safe from data loss. No device or device configuration is going to protect you from device failure. Not a RAID 5, not a solid state drive, and not even the cloud are infallible. ALL devices will eventually fail. ALL OF THEM.

What does it mean to "backup" data?

We get calls almost daily from people saying that their "backup" failed and they need their data recovered. In football, having a backup quarterback implies that there is a starter. The backup is needed only of the starter is injured or fails to perform. If you don't have two quarterbacks, you don't have a backup. It is the same for data. Putting data on an external drive or on the cloud and then deleting the original copy is just changing the location of your data, NOT backing it up. A backup of data implies two separate locations.

Fusion Data Recovery recommends the use of a set of smaller (1 TB or less) external drives where irreplaceable data, like pictures or archival documents, is kept. If you have data that is constantly changing, a cloud solution, such as DropBox, G-Drive, OneDrive, etc is highly recommended. Our technicians are available to answer questions and give assistance.
